If also making the socks, buy an additional ball, perhaps in a fifth color, for the heels, toes, and cuff (∼350 yds. total for the socks). The smoother the yarn used, the less the frustration caused by frequent tangling. See Figure 8 for a knitting chart highlighting this overlap in a case where n = 2, h = 5, and the stripes progress right-handedly. Let’s look at our original example in this light, where n, h = 2. Then k = 5 for precessing stripes and k = 3 for progressing stripes. In either case, we are to knit two stitches per color. As we will see later, any positive multiple of nh + 1 (respectively nh − 1) would work for k, as well, and generally k will need to be at least 50 stitches for any practical knitting purpose.

Beginning with color 3 and working in color sequence, decrease 15 stitches by working (k3 k2tog) 15 times over one round, leaving 16 stitches of each color (60 stitches left in a round). The next round will start with four stitches of color 2. Continue knitting for six more rows or almost 1”, switching colors after every 16 stitches. Now there are four stitches knitted on top of the next color rather than five. Beginning with color 1 and working in color sequence, decrease 15 stitches by working (k2 k2tog) 15 times over one round, leaving 12 stitches of each color (45 stitches left in a round).
