They’re inactive and withdrawn as compared to other times of the year. Summer sad? When you think of SAD, you may most commonly equate it with the season of winter. Winter SAD is by far the most common type of seasonally related depression, but much less is known about a type of SAD that occurs in the summer months. People who complain of summertime depression often cite humidity and heat as particularly troublesome for them. In contrast to people with winter SAD, summer SAD sufferers report more problems with a lack of sleep, poor appetite, and agitation.
Therefore, humidity likely affects moods as well. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that on hot, humid days people generally feel miserable. When it’s cold and damp, it’s also pretty hard to feel cheerful. ߜ Temperature: Extreme heat has been related to increases in irritability, anger, and violent crime. Some studies report that extremes in heat decrease your ability to remember things, slow your reaction time, and decrease mood. And as you get closer to the equator, the rate of summer related SAD increases (see Chapter 2).
