When Lytton proposed on February 17, 1909, Woolf accepted his proposal The Author Matures immediately—only to change her mind minutes later, to her own and Strachey’s relief. Strachey, who was openly homosexual, corresponded regularly with Woolf. They enjoyed each other’s wit and humor, and the “safety” of Strachey’s homosexuality may have attracted the sexually inexperienced Woolf.
