Several days before the celebration, pilgrims in purple robes can be seen walking great distances on the Tran-Isthmian Highway on their way to Portobelo, some even crawling on their knees as they enter the town. Nazareno followers from all over the country and Latin America, and others from as far as the United States and Europe, come to celebrate and take part in the procession. The participants are from all walks and levels of society. The celebration has three distinct phases. During the first, which starts a few days before October 21, there is a party atmosphere in Portobelo highlighted by gambling and drinking.
These dishes are prepared in households and restaurants on a regular basis. There are many small local eateries in Panama. It is not unusual to find one or two people with small shops or food stands selling a variety of lowcost foods. These small shops and food stands are popular for breakfast and lunch.
