Below are my descriptions of what I think they address in a general sense. Local community. Local community is “old-fashioned” community in that it consists of people who can communicate directly with each other without too much effort. This typically involves interaction of a geographically immediate and often personally meaningful nature. In terms of groups and locales, this refers to families, classrooms, schools, or the neighborhoods or towns in which we live. In some ways, local community is the Perspectives on Citizenship and Community Digital Age equivalent of solidary community in that it can often involve groups with whom we share common cultures, concerns, responsibilities, and interests, reinforced by geographic proximity.
Communities were physical, period. Thus, my journey through the project was largely uphill. It began with trying to define community, which, as it turned out, was a complex and nearly impossible task. To give the reader an idea of how difficult community is to define, Wikipedia opens its article on community with the following: “In sociology, the concept of community has caused infinite debate, and sociologists are yet to reach agreement on a definition of the term. There were ninetyfour discrete definitions of the term by the mid-1950s” (Community, 2010).
