Local community is “old-fashioned” community in that it consists of people who can communicate directly with each other without too much effort. This typically involves interaction of a geographically immediate and often personally meaningful nature. In terms of groups and locales, this refers to families, classrooms, schools, or the neighborhoods or towns in which we live. These early days gave us mail lists—still known as listservs—user groups, and a number of attempts at distributed resources and social media long since forgotten.
