Question: Lacan didn’t answer what the fate of the drive is after analysis. No. The point of the experience called la passe was to throw some light onto this question of the outcome of the analysis concerning drives. Question: To return to something quite well known, have you acted in accordance with your desire? Every desire needs to reshape its goal, so every desire is its interpretation. So the ethics of analysis concerns the question: Have you kept on interpreting what you want? Isn’t this the real ethics of analysis?

When Lacan first proposed this way of handling resistance, it was very difficult for practicing analysts to take in. That’s because an analyst’s prestige comes from her conviction that she knows the truth, and that she’s the one who’s going to tell it to the analysand. Lacan’s way means that you can’t identify with such a position, that you have to abdicate it. This wasn’t easy for analysts, so at first his thesis was not as readily admitted as it now may be. This brings up the question of the place of truth.

With the discovery of narcissism, however, the ego was next envisioned as the agent that makes me mistake what I am for what I want to be. So how can the same agent be both a guide to reality and a source of illusion? In addition to these two contradictions in his theory, Freud’s experience led him to discover some astonishing facts, so astonishing you may say they qualify as unnatural, so their explanation is not easy to find.
