Discuss what the story is about, and then give an exam on the content of the story. When the focus of an assignment is on meaning, students tend to make greater gains in comprehension than when the focus is on word analysis and accurate reading. Sometimes watching a dramatization of a story played on a television set or a screen will encourage an interest in reading a particular story and provide variety as well as an opportunity to think about language in spoken as well as written form. Among the causes that make reading a struggle are auditory trauma and ear infections that affect the ability to hear speech.
A quick overview of the story before beginning to read can also be useful. Are there chapters with headings? If not, a quick survey of the sections, either chapters or paragraphs, will yield clues that will guide the reading and improve comprehension. If the assignment is an essay, a quick skimming for paragraph topic sentences and a look at the conclusion will provide useful information before beginning the actual reading. Students should be warned not to make premature judgments based on any of these pre-reading activities but to let the story or essay speak for itself.
Facilitate discussions by devising questions that lead students to make qualitative and evaluative judgments about the content they’ve read. 9 Recognize the home and school experiences that impact literacy development. Parents who are readers and a family that values books generally produce children who read early and well. This is enhanced if parents and others read to the child even before he/she is able to read alone. In a home where learning and books are treated with respect, children go off to school much better prepared than children from homes where the opposite is true.
