The deception of appearances, that virtuous behavior is true beauty, the importance of gratitude, and the need to put duty before love are among the lessons the Fairy explicates. A full translation of the tale can be found in Zipes’s anthology Beauties, Beasts and Enchantment (1989). Hearne worked from Ernest Dowson’s 1908 translation, which differs in some important details from Zipes’s. I have used the Zipes translation here. de Beaumont Madame de Beaumont took her story from de Villeneuve but left out the long descriptions of Beauty’s entertainments at the Beast’s palace, the appearances in Beauty’s dreams of the prince and the fairy, and the stories of Beauty’s and the Beast’s backgrounds.

She asked to be called Beauty when she was five years old and didn’t understand what Honor was. She’s a thin, undersized tomboy with big hands and feet who is only interested in books and horses. Her closest companion is her horse, Greatheart, whom she takes with her to the Beast’s palace. Beauty works hard, but so do the rest of Reworkings of “Beauty and the Beast” in Novel Form 17 her family. Her two older sisters are good, loving, and capable. Her father loves her but doesn’t depend on her, and he has a romance of his own after the family moves to the country.
