But following an illness that left him deaf, he began to produce images of nightmarish intensity, beginning with Caprices (1793-8), a series of engravings satirizing the excesses of the established Church. Goya casts a questioning eye on the late Enlightenment world, displaying a profoundly Gothic form of Romanticism. During the occupation of Spain by the French (1808-14) under Napoleon's brother Joseph Buonaparte, Goya remained an official artist. He was also theoretically in favour of the "liberal" culture of Napoleonic France.
Herder rejected the idea that there was some notional higher purpose (what postmodernists now call a "grand narrative") by which other cultures could be judged. For Herder, each culture was specific, formed by its own particular set of circumstances. By emphasizing that each culture should be understood in its own terms, Herder was laying the foundations of anthropology as a modern discipline.
