While their readings of Islam are by no means the dominant constitutive forces in Muslim politics, the growing involvement of Muslim women in transnational interpretive dialogues has significant implications for the study of Islamic interpretation and activism. It suggests a need for direct engagement with contemporary Muslim intellectuals – for this study, women in particular – to explore how cultural encounters are shaping their Muslim identities and approaches to the hermeneutics of Islam. Contemporary Islam contains a wide variety of interpretive possibilities from which Muslim women can draw as they reshape their self-understandings in light of new experiences.
For answers to these and other questions, we must address ourselves to the subject of contemporary Islamic hermeneutics. Chapter 3 Trends and Transformations in Contemporary Islamic Hermeneutics There are many reasons for Western interest in the subject of women and Islam. Many Western women find themselves drawn to the subject out of a genuine sense of curiosity, and perhaps also concern. Anthropologists and students of comparative religion are motivated by habits of questioning that are specific to their respective disciplines, and to their efforts to understand distinct ways of being human.
This literature has been heavily influenced by Western literature on transnational feminism (for example, Mohanty, Russo and Torres, 1991; Grewal and Kaplan, 1994). While it is not a primary emphasis, writings in this genre have recently begun to touch upon the relationship between transnationalism and identity (Moghadam, 2005; Badran, 2002; Bayes and Tohidi, 2001). Rather than view Muslim women only as objects of transnational forces, the emerging literature on Muslim women and transnationalism seeks to underscore opportunities that transnationalism provides for social agency (Tohidi, 2002; Moghadam, 2005; Badran, 2002; Cooke, 2001).
