Being the other, or, worse still, null and void with no place or part to play, is to feel horrifyingly alone and totally powerless to alter that circumstance. It is difficult to grasp the appalling depth of suffering that accompanies this state of abandonment, which, on the one hand, is attached to primal experiences of exclusion during infancy revived with identical acuity in adulthood and, on the other, contradicts the primary and fundamental human requirement rooted in the need to be included, integrated as a part of the whole.
Miss J doubts all she is told and oscillates constantly between depression and revolt. Her life is entirely dominated by the need to know, and prove, the feelings she evokes in others. The office manager where she works, noting her fatigue, offered a leave of absence; she refused, in the hope that he would insist. She reciprocated the advances of a young man and they became acquaintances, but when he asked her out to the cinema, she declined for the same reason as her refusal of the holiday. Neither the office manager nor the young man knew the reason behind her blunt rejection.
This case provides a clear demonstration of the strong abandonic tendency to judge the self and others from an exterior, rather than an interior, perspective by interpreting what is factually apparent in ways that fail to grasp real and profound meaning. We will return presently to this observation of abandonic externalism (Odier, 1956, pp. 14–17) applying the following corollary: absence of a capacity to internalise, profoundly and structurally, marks the particular ego specific to this neurosis.
