The behaviour of Victorians, in many branches of endeavour, showed how they viewed the world in which they lived through a common optic. He designed the track, the locomotives, the stations and the bas reliefs applied to their façades; bridges, the bores, linings and classic portico entrances of Box Tunnel. In short, he had an organic conception of what he was doing. 3 Indeed, both he and Stephenson, the other most celebrated of the railway engineers, were known on occasion to decline projects on the grounds (Stephenson was explicit in one case) that the railway project proposed was not, in his view, to the benefit of the people in the county through which the railway would go.
