You know w hat the young knights were taught, Monty- to keep their bodies under, and bring the m into s ubjection; to love God, and speak truth always. 'That. sounds very grand and noble to me. But when a big fellow takes up a little o ne y ou know pretty well that tlwse ar e not the kind of lessons he teaches~ (57) 'TI1is passage echoes a nearly identical one from Tom Brown's Schooldays. When an older boy sends a younger one to enlist Tom Brown's service, Brown and his 5 + Losing and Using Queer Youth friend East note that the younger boy is "one of the miserable little pretty whitehanded curly-headed boys, petted and pampered by some of the big fellows, who wrote their verses for them, taught them to drink and use bad langu age, and did all they could to spoil them for everything in this world an d the ne:~:t" (233).

I wonder what would happen if I looked like a fairy to e\•eryon e" ( 17). Finny's lack of concern is itself queer in the homosocial context of a boys' school where, by the 1940s, such a label m ight incur a significant cost to on e's social status, if not physical safety. The pink shirt, moreover, proves central to Gene's attempt to become Finny. Wearing the shirt completes Gen e's incorporation of Finny into his own self following Finny's first absence from Devon. That Finny originates each of these symbols signines a phallic a uthority ultimately claimed by Gene as the story's narrator.

As a result of the popularity of these novels and the potentially controversial n ature of their s ubject matter, they have been repeatedly challenged by those seeking to have them banned from schools and libraries. Bridge to Terabithia was the ninth most frequently challenged book of the 1990s, and A Separate Peace has been similarly embattled an d in some cases even removed from classroom use. Given, though, what others recognize as their literary merit and pedagogical usefulness, the attacks have been resisted by educators and librarians, resulting in the publication of rationales composed to defend their use.
