At the nose of the tool the speed is always lower than at the outer surface of the bar, but the difference is usually small and the cutting speed is considered as constant along the tool edge in turning.

There is in fact a pattern of flow, in the work material around the cutting edge and across the tool faces, which is characteristic of the metal or alloy being cut and the conditions of cutting. A pattern of flow and a velocity gradient within the work material, with velocity approaching zero at the tool/work interface, are the basis of the model for relative movement under conditions of seizure, to replace the classical friction model of sliding conditions. A flow-zone of this character indicates seizure at the interface.
