An examination of the characters of these laws and theories, and a comparison with those that arise in classical physics, might provide a broader and more balanced view of the nature of laws and theories and of their role in science. From the outset, we should very carefully define the terms of our discourse. The notion of laws of nature has medieval origin as the edicts of an all-powerful deity to his angelic servants about how the functioning of the world should be arranged and directed. It may be helpful to distinguish three quite different senses in which laws of nature are considered in modern discussions.
Witness the power of SANFFBAT. On the surface, these theoretical structures have little in common with the neat axiomatizations of Von Neumann, Bohm, or even Hempel. These are not clean computations based on derivations from first principles; they are feasible only through heavy reliance on approximation, idealization, and empirical determination of theoretical quantities. More fascinating still, molecular orbital models are frequently conceived, represented, and manipulated diagrammatically by practitioners who lack the technical training to tackle Hamiltonians and wave equations.
For example, chemistry does not explain the distribution of oxygen on the Earth, although chemical regularities would inevitably figure in any such explanation. We seldom ask questions about the boundaries on explanation, yet arguably, these boundaries mark an essential feature of the modern scientific worldview; the boundaries were quite different in ancient science. There are other boundaries that seem accidental or arbitrary, but perhaps are not. Chemists think it their business to explain why oxygen gas is diatomic, phosphorus gas polyatomic, and helium gas monatomic.
