All injustice springs originally from man himself or from what we are pleased to call Nature. The intelligence of Nature is purely mechanical; she has smiles and frowns for both moral and immoral alike, without regard to character or conduct. The “justice” or “injustice” of man is purely arbitrary, hence its seeming inexplicability. Yeats points out that there is no moral harm to Wilde’s writing, that the attacks made on Wilde in the English press on grounds of immorality are ridiculous. Yeats also raises a question central to an understanding of Wilde and his art: the question of sincerity and veracity.

Apart from my conduct, which was prompted by my great sorrow and a weakness of nerve which bordered on hysteria, that farewelltaking was not lacking in dignity.
