Now the war was spreading, and the British Royal Navy was determined to secure control of Delaware Bay. ” Fisher also realized that some of his neighbors were British sympathizers. When Henry Fisher first received his instructions to report the approach of any British ship, he set up certain signals and had all of the buoys that marked the shoals taken up, to deter the British from sailing past Lewes and up the bay, with its treacherous shallows and shoals. When a British ship entered the mouth of the bay, lanterns at the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse were to be lit and alarm guns fired.

Then in February, 1776, Fisher and the other Lewes residents were surprised by the arrival of a small squadron of eight American warships under the command of Commodore Esek Hopkins that dropped anchor near Cape Henlopen. Although it was in the middle of the winter, those on board were delighted with the warm weather. One of the officers wrote: “Tis now twelve o’clock & we are now laying at anchor at Old Keel Road at Cape Henlopen waiting for wind. ” They soon disappeared over the horizon, sailing for the Bahamas, where they hoped to capture British war materiel.

Unable to capture a pilot, Captain Hamond had difficulty avoiding the shallows of Delaware Bay. The Roebuck ran aground several times, but each time Hamond was able to free the frigate from the soft sand. Although Hamond was able to capture several small merchant vessels, the Americans quickly learned that they could avoid the British warship by keeping close to shore. On April 7, Hamond spotted a small schooner commanded by Captain Nehemiah Field of Lewes, as the vessel rounded Cape Henlopen.
