The effect of symptoms on a person’s behavior can vary markedly, with younger individuals at higher risk for acting in response to both hallucinations and delusions.

Lack of Awareness of One’s Own Symptoms as a Symptom Although not explicitly included as one of the symptoms of schizophrenia or other severe mental illnesses, a lack of awareness of the symptoms themselves by the persons with the disorder seems to be a common characteristic of the illness. This is especially evident during the acute phase of the disorder. Individuals seem unaware of the fact that their symptoms are, in fact, symptoms of an illness.
