Der Eigengeruchswahn trat erstmalig nach dem Tod des Bruders in Erscheinung. Mnestische Defizite waren im Kurzzeit-, aber auch im Langzeitgedächtnis erkennbar. Der formale Gedankengang wies inhaltliche Einengungen und eine assoziative Lockerung auf.

In der medizinischen Literatur wurde sie erstmals von Marcellus von Side, der im 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. lebte, beschrieben: „Wer von der Lykanthropie befallen wird, geht nachts im Februar auf die Friedhöfe, ahmt Wölfe und Hunde nach und verweilt an den Gräbern bis zum Morgengrauen.
