Smell glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. Different odors turn on different combinations of glomeruli, and that pattern of excitation represents a particular smell. The identification—perceiving a smell and knowing what it is—takes place in other parts of the brain. The identification of smell can play a role in communication. Mice, for example, can smell a chemical in urine that helps them tell male mice from female mice. This chemical only exists in a male mouse’s urine, and smelling it activates neurons in a mouse’s olfactory bulb.

The owl can do this because its brain contains maps of auditory space. That is, parts of its brain serve as three-dimensional maps of the auditory world that surrounds it. Imagine that the owl is inside a big sphere and hears a sound upward and to the right. There is a similar, but much smaller, sphere of tissue in calls, it knows the frequency that it sent and it has elaborate tonotopic maps in its brain to determine the frequency of the returning echoes. This echo contains more information about an insect.
