All persons can dissociate themselves partly or completely from events, experiences, memories, or bodily sensations. Dissociation is defense psychological mechanism described by Freud (abwehrmechanismen), which is different from simply not remembering or forgetting, where a memory can be jogged back into existence by a clue or someone actively helping.
