These people had to solve an impossible problem: how to accept Lagache, while leaving Lacan out. It took them at least five or six years to solve the problem which ended in the second split. In the French Society, after the split with the Paris Society, there weren’t so many training analysts and people who could supervise, so most of them had their analysis with Lacan and their supervisions with Lagache. When did you come to analysis? After 1953. When I won my concours, I resisted psychoanalysis for another three years.
In the beginning was the verb [Editor’s note: it is word in English] and the verb was made flesh’—this is St John’s Gospel, I’m translating from the French! One day, in a seminar, Lacan said this is the wrong translation: one shouldn’t say, ‘In the beginning was the verb’ but ‘In the beginning was speech’—la parole. ’ Lacan was infuriated. Even for someone who is not trained in theology like myself, it is clear that to use the verb is something quite different. The verb is that part of language that refers to action; using the verb to qualify the action still has close links with what it says; the verb becoming flesh is incarnation.
