Human factors/ergonomics (HFE) as a self-discipline has grown by means of accretions instead of having been constructed systematically and intentionally. accordingly, this book's objective creates a proper conceptual constitution for HFE. it truly is meant as a contribution to cultural background simply because (a) ours is a technological civilization, and (b) one can't comprehend expertise outdoor of many of the disciplines that make up that expertise. A disciplinary heritage is extremely really expert, however the writer continues that HFE is particular in being the one self-discipline that relates people to know-how. different behavioral disciplines like anthropology have little reference to know-how, and this is often what makes HFE vital within the current old period.

The author sees a great deal more in the system. Effects of Technology on Human Performance Much of what can be said about this topic has already been said in previous sections. In a technological civilization, technology is (next to sex, perhaps) the most potent stimulus for human responses. It not only changes the human role in immediate interaction with physical objects, but serves as a backdrop for almost everything the human does. This is something the HFE professional is not likely to think about perhaps because it is so obvious.

There are also changes in human behavior, as differentiated from performance, but these are much more tenuous. For example, there are intimations that use of computers by humans creates a feeling of increased power and control in the human and a progressively increasing reliance on larger and larger databases as a prerequisite for DM. In addition, technology can be enthusiastically accepted by younger people and just as enthusiastically rejected by a number of older people. We should not stereotype the older cohort because there is a continuum of acceptance and rejection of technology.

These building blocks represent the context in which the discipline as a whole functions. Like the material in a computer memory, they may at any time be retrieved from memory and pushed to the forefront of consciousness. Moreover, a scientific HFE discipline would be unimaginable without them. At the same time, the fact that it is possible to describe HFE in the same terms as those used of that most basic of sciences, mathematics, helps to bolster the point that HFE too is a science. Constructs and assumptions that form the discipline's infrastructure exist in the human's concept space, but at a lower level, if one can think of concepts Page 6 occupying space in a topological, Lewinian (Lewin, 1936) sense.
