57 Whatever the answer to that speculation, the couple drifted apart in 1919. Perhaps it had been too wildly intense to endure. But perhaps Anderson's contempt for American culture eventually irritated Seldes; for as we shall see, he had little sympathy for the nation-bashing so fondly indulged in during the 1920s by H. L. Mencken and the expatriates. In one of Porter's essays there is a thinly veiled description of Jane: She talked constantly of Europe, of the drama, the art, the society, the traditions and rich backgrounds of culture abounding there.
Above all, Seldes and Cummings enjoyed an affectionate, unbroken rapport until the poet-artist died in 1962. Seldes was deeply distressed by Cummings' death.
