They are attractive because of their year-round warm climate, sandy beaches, and coral reefs for scuba divers. Aruba, an island 40 miles (64 kilometers) off Venezuela, was a Dutch possession until its people voted to secede from the Netherlands in 1986.

The Dutch valued freethinkers who challenged traditional ways of looking at things. Such open-mindedness made their country a sanctuary for Jews, Huguenots (sixteenth and seventeenth-century French Protestants), and other dissenters from across Europe.
