They were, of course, already going bad. Since January 1918 Lenin had ruled Russia with almost dictatorial powers, and in 1919 Bela Kun had seized temporary control of Hungary. The year 1923 had seen the capitulation of King Alphonso of Spain to the military rule of Miguel Primo de Rivera. Before the end of the decade, Marshall Jozef Pilsudski would come to power in Poland and Stalin’s dictatorship would be publicly acknowledged. The situation in Italy, relatively stable since 1922 when King Victor Emmanuel had invited Mussolini to form his cabinet, had worsened dramatically with the disappearance in June 1924 of Giacomo Matteotti, a powerful and articulate Socialist deputy.
