If there are rapids or waterfalls in the river, the mixing will be speeded up and representative samples may be obtained downstream. Sampling for the determination of dissolved oxygen, however, should take place upstream of the rapids or waterfall because the turbulence will cause the water to be saturated with oxygen. In such a case, several samples should be taken across the width of the river to allow for the possibility of incomplete mixing. A bridge is an excellent place at which to establish a sampling station (provided that it is located at a sampling site on the river).

Although similar to that of rivers in the surrounding geographical region, it will be extensively influenced by altitude, exposure of the slope to wind and variations in rainfall.
