The goal of the chapter is to provide educators with more information about African American family literacy practices. Informing educators about specific ways in which the African American parents/guardians in this study assisted their children with literacy and descriptions of literacy practices in the home can help educators form stronger partnerships with African American parents in the hope of improving the reading and writing skills of African American children.

In fact, there was a statistically significant relationship between children’s math problems and how parents/guardians rated the quality of academic assistance that they provided to their children. Those who were most satisfied with the quality of their assistance were less likely to have children who struggled with math. Another message is that parents/guardians feel frustrated that teachers, whom they assume have been trained to assist their children in specific subjects, such as math, are failing to do so.

Problems with three academic subjects—history, science, and social studies—were also linked to math problems. Moreover, problems with pronunciation, grammar, and discipline were also correlated to math problems. 3). Writing Writing was the second most frequently cited academic problem that parents/guardians identified.
