However, before any additional funds are spent, you should receive a formal “change order” or contract amendment that details any changes and their associated costs. It is up to you at that point to either accept the changes or reject them.
Although this type of billing method is still used by some consultants, it has been my experience that most clients prefer the fixed fee approach so they can determine their budget up front and plan accordingly. A fixed fee contract is such that you will know exactly what the budget will be before you execute any contract. The fee will often be all inclusive, which means that all fees and expenses are included. It is up to the consultant to ensure that expenses are managed properly and the project proceeds as planned.
That may seem counterproductive to some people, but as a professional one must know when to step aside. I know of several other consultants who have done the same, but in most cases it is up to the client to screen potential security consultants for their experience. If when you are interviewing a security consultant you get the sense that they do not have the proper experience, trust your instincts. When it comes to “knowledgeable” about your industry, it does not mean that the consultant has worked in a field like tire manufacturing if your company manufactures tires.
