An unexpected polymerization and recrystallization occurred during the aging of this polymer film, which was used as a recorder for X-ray projection of a diatom shell. The diatom shell was selected as a test specimen because its planar struc­ ture provides a good direct contact with the recorder film, and because its rich perforation and the silica membrane covering the perforation holes give a detailed and well-defined microstructure and consist of units with low X-ray absorption.

The three dark spots indicated by an arrow consist of residual foreign matter left on the film surface after processing and rinsing the latent image. Similar electron microscopic enlargement of an X-ray record of de­ tails of a boat-shaped diatom (Cymbella cistula) with polygonal pores is displayed in Fig. 9. The recorder film is considerably thinner than in Fig. 8. The width of the silica bars is of the order of 1000 A (Fig. 10) and indicates somewhat better resolution.
