With no insanity defense as such put before them, and no judicial instructions regarding how a hallucination could lead to involuntary action, the jurors responded to their limited options by returning a conviction for murder. Of course, one has no indication how the case might have concluded if the prisoner’s hallucination had been a matter of mere seconds rather than many minutes.
