In traditional research, the community typically is not involved in designing the research project. Also, if the project runs into problems (for example, when a study takes a long time or costs too much money), community members, who have invested their time and energy, may find that they are left without a resolution to the issue that was studied or challenges that were identified.
The following examples help illuminate this point. Examples of Powerful and Influential Individuals • In many small towns, long-standing residents—those who have resided in the community most of their lives, or members of families with a history in the community for many generations—are highly respected by other residents. These community members, however, might not be treated with similar respect by outsiders who have little knowledge of community history or understanding the social structure.
By becoming familiar with the community’s systems and structure of social hierarchy and power, researchers will recognize when they must respect those systems, such as in certain ethnic families.
