They also called him “Chancho” [The Pig]. ”10 He was also displaying an increasing interest in politics, a sympathy and compassion for those less fortunate than himself, and a willingness to fight, although his reasons and goals remained uncertain, even to himself. In one famous anecdote, Granado had been arrested for attending a student antimilitary demonstration. Ernesto visited him at the police station, and Granado suggested to him that he and his other friends organize further demonstrations.

Ernesto was on the run so much that the chaos at home barely affected him. He was either working, studying at his Aunt Beatriz’s apartment, or traveling—a newfound passion. At first he confined his trips to weekends hitchhiking back and forth between Buenos Aires and Córdoba. But he soon began going further and further away from home for longer and longer periods of time. It was becoming clear that while Ernesto enjoyed the study of medicine, it wasn’t enough to keep him fully interested. He needed more.

He would now study to become a doctor. While his best grades in high school had been in the sciences, nothing in his past would have indicated an interest in medicine as a career. What had changed? His grandmother’s death was obviously a factor. Others feel that his mother’s bout with breast cancer was a reason. Perhaps it was a desire to find a cure for his own ongoing medical problems. ╯. ”2 He wholeheartedly plunged into his studies while holding down several part-time jobs. The most important of those jobs was at the Clinica Pisani, an allergy-treatment clinic.
